Sunday: Hikes and Spikes!

Jul 14, 2025 | 7 comments

We are all thinking of our loved ones back home! After a full day of travel, we awoke after several hours (okay, maybe it was five hours) of rest and got to participate in a church service at Sutton Bible Church! It was only a short hike from camp and gave us our first taste of how beautiful this area of the world is. We made some new friends and heard a message about true faith. A key takeaway for many of our students from the message is that doubt is not scary; it’s a natural part of our faith journey and means that we DO have faith! But some of us may have nodded off…
After church, our team spent some time exploring Thunderbird Waterfall! It was about a 3 mile hike round trip and at least a few of us stayed dry 🙂

We’ve enjoyed the beauty of this community in multiple ways already and our team is so thankful for how God continues to reveal himself through people around us and in the mountainous nature of Alaska.

Then we came back to camp and enjoyed the rest of our evening enjoying each other’s company over a campfire and prepared our skills clubs and group game for Monday, the first day or day camp. We shared, we practiced, we laughed, we listened, we learned, and we gave thanks for a restful, fun day.

Fun facts:
  • Two of our students connected with an older couple, Janie and John, and are hoping to try their famous and legendary moose burger stew at the Friday potluck (we will report back on this!)
  • No bear sightings!
  • Experiencing worship in a different and smaller church setting was impact full
  • Intense matches of volleyball were played – with cheers and chants and team spirit! “Say what, say what, ACE!” “Bark bark bark bark bark!”

Tomorrow: Day Camp Day 1, here we come!

Beautiful pictures! What a gift that you got a sunny and mostly clear day to see the Mts on the day of your hike! That is a God moment! Keep looking for Him and listening- He is at work!
